The period between July 1 to Sept. 30 marked the second quarter since the launch of the Deepfakes Analysis Unit (DAU). In the post-election scenario, the DAU continued to analyse audio and video content that had been generated or manipulated using A.I. The data that was analysed for this report included content that was received through DAU's dedicated tipline as well as that, which was escalated to the DAU Secretariat by fact-checking partners.
Some insights drawn from the data analysed for this period are as follows:
● Most video content pertained to financial topics, including scams.
● Manipulation of original video footage using synthetic audio continues to be a rising trend in video content.
● A.I.-manipulated videos featured prominent business leaders, actors, news anchors, politicians, and sportsmen to peddle fake gaming apps and phoney financial platforms.
● Within content on political figures, Narendra Modi was the most featured, followed by Joe Biden, Rahul Gandhi, Yogi Adityanath, Asaduddin Owaisi and Amit Shah (in that order).
● Health misinformation involving cure for diabetes and parasitic diseases was packaged with synthetic voice in video format.
● Dead separatist Prabhakaran was resurrected using a deepfake video.
● Fake video of Bangladesh’s chief announcing his resignation was produced using A.I. voice.
● Actress Sonakshi Sinha was targeted through a deepfake video.
