The videos and audios analysed by the Deepfakes Analysis Unit (DAU) between Oct.1 and Dec.31 were primarily received through DAU’s dedicated tipline. In addition, the DAU also verified such content escalated to the Secretariat by its fact-checking partners.
Some interesting cases and trends observed during this period are as follows:
- Politicians from Maharashtra were targeted using voice clones right before voting opened for the state assembly elections in November.
- A.I. voice continues to be used for promoting health misinformation and financial scam videos.
- A noticeable sub-theme in health misinformation videos has been the use of A.I. voice to fabricate narratives about prominent doctors being attacked for supposedly working on miraculous cures.
- Government institutions or senior government officials are sometimes falsely linked to dubious health or financial schemes through video content, apparently to make such content seem legit.
- Copycat scam content is also a noticeable trend, especially in financial scam videos.
- A.I.-manipulated content used to peddle a fake narrative about animosity between senior government officials is often packaged as a sensational television news story.
